For the longest time now, I've wanted to raise honeybees. As I've said before, I am enchanted by all things beeish...honey, beeswax, etc. I've dreamed of being a bee charmer like Idgie Threadgoode in
Fried Green Tomatoes, or sending the love like August and Lilly in
The Secret Life of Bees. Finally it happpened. At last I'm realizing this dream and thanking God for creating the marvelous, gentle honeybee. My husband and I had the best time setting up the supers and releasing the little winged lovelies. We didn't get stung once. I did burn myself twice with the smoker. But that was okay. I was too happy to care.

ReplyDeleteHow funny - on my "one thousand gifts" post scheduled for tomorrow, I also listed honey bees. My brother recently started keeping them, and he gave me a little tour last week of his hives. We opened them up to check on the queens and feed them some sugar water while they're getting established. I plan to blog some of my photos later this week. Bees are truly amazing little creatures. I enjoyed seeing your photos, and I hope your bee-keeping adventures go well! God bless...

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on becoming beekeepers. My daughter has kept bees for a few years and we all get great pleasure from watching them as well as eating the honey. Did you see the photo of our 3 year old granddaughter in her new beekeeper's outfit? You'll be wanting one when your granddaughter comes to visit.

If I had bees, I'd keep them on edge, telling them, "The only reason for being a bee is to make honey. And the only reason for making honey is so I can eat it"? ;-)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new hives! That's so awesome! John and I talked about getting beehives, but we were afraid the bears in our yard would tear them apart. Keep those snaps coming -- I'm living vicariously!

The hive looks amazing - you would probably believe this - my "vintage souled" daughter wants to keep bees too! I will definitely be checking out the guys you got them from...it looks like they have creative ideas for making gardens work no matter where you live!

I never kept them myself, but friends have, and my mother in law did...And I have bought bees for the CSA farm I belong to in years (like this last one) when their bees failed to overwinter. There is something very special about them.........It seems like just the thing for you!
