What would happen if......

I must confess that I've been a lazy blogger of late. A lot has been going on--some joyful and some difficult. I've been feeling emotionally spent, but through it all, God is good, and it is well with my soul. I've missed visiting all your lovely blogs and am playing catch-up to your posts, reading and commenting.

So - about the title of this post. If someone asks me what type of artist I am, I would say mixed media. But I like to call it "What Would Happen If...". God wired me a particular way. It is essential for me to always be making things. Whether it's a painting or soup doesn't matter. I need to be creating something--it doesn't feel right if I can't. It's how I recharge my batteries. The funny thing about it is that I'm always more interested in the process than the outcome. Except if it involves food--then I want the outcome to be good, especially if I am feeding someone other than myself!

But anyway, I get these ideas. Like - what would happen if I took a hundred year old screen door and treated it as if it were a gi-normous embroidery or crewel-work canvas? And what would happen if I drew a design on the screen door with oil pastels (because they stick). And then started to crewel/embroider over that design, embellishing it with some antique buttons and other textile scraps that I have lying around in my studio? What would happen? Will it be hideous? Would it be amazing? Haven't a clue. But I am curious. So here we go.

Who has a hundred year old screen door, you may ask. Me. I have five actually. I bought them for a dollar a piece, which I think is pretty good, considering I've seen them in antique shops for seventy-five dollars or more. One has been put on our henhouse. This one sits on sawhorses in my studio.

And the three others are stored in the garage waiting to discover their life's re-purpose. I'm open to ideas.

  3. Wow that's quite an idea you've come up with! I can't wait to see the finished product. It sounds amazing. I understand the creative urge, having had many encounters with it myself, but for me it comes and goes, often with long spaces of "normality" in between! The process is often the most interesting part for me as well....

  10. Jodi, I love it! And I've missed you. The pom poms are my favorite. You always make me want to make stuff. Please show us how it progresses!
I'm about the put up the nut garland you made me last fall. I still feel loved by that!

  11. Truly a creative mind at work. Love it. I love seeing the design journey, although I'm an "end product" kind of person rather than "enjoying the journey", when it comes to my own work. Probably why other people's design routes are so interesting. Looking forward to seeing more of the door.

  13. What would happen if God gave a lady named Jodi a few old screen doors? Color and Creativity and Joy! Love it, love it!! Also, glad for your joyful, sorry for the difficult. As you say, God is good, all the time. Prayers for you that all may remain well with your soul as He journeys you forward. With your mind no telling what the journey will hold for those other screen doors:)

  17. It's an amazing idea! Did you have to re-screen it? I mean, I don't think hundred-year-old screen would stand up to much needlework. Can't wait to see the finished product. You'll have to put it somewhere protected from the elements, yes? Not use it as an actual door? Or will you use it and not worry about that?

  18. How creative!!! I can't wait to see them when they're done.

  19. I love it! You sound like a kindred spirit-always creating things. That's what I hope to be doing again very soon. Please post a picture of the finished piece.

  20. Jodi! Anonymous (above) is my friend Ethel. She just called me and said, "Have you read Curious Acorn's latest post? I think we really might be kindred spirits!" Can I tell you how completely and utterly jazzed I am, not only by your mad art skills and the way your brain works, but also because Ethel loves them and finds joy in them too. Truly the world is filled with more kindred spirits than we think!

  21. Thank you, Nancy and Ethel. I consider it an honor to be kindred with the two of you! I will post pictures of my progress. Thanks for the encouragement.

  22. Leslie, I know the screen is old, maybe not as old as the door frame. But the clue to its age lies in the fact that the screen is nailed on, not stapled. I love the original paint color. When finished I would hang it on a wall if I like it.

  23. I lost my long post because they want me to select a profile and when I select google they wnat me to give them my mobile phone number and I will not. I'll try another profile, but it makes me a little crazy that I lost all I wanted to say about what I would do with such a door and how much I liked your idea.

  24. Awesome screen door idea! I have some window screens that need to be patched up/replaced -- I might have to steal that idea! :-)

Are you going to post a photo of the finished screen?

    BTW, lovin' those scissors!

  25. Just coming back (as thickethouse again, rather than Kristi from the Western Reserve) to say that if I were doing these sorts of panels, I'd do them the landscape way and one would be an underwater seascape with all my fancy could suggest in the way of plants, coral, fish, etc....and the other would be the forest at the edge with trees, flowers, small animals.....maybe small children too.........Such a fun project. I can't wait to see what you do, playing with these.....

  27. What a wonderful idea! Oh! I am so inspired! I have a big window screen from the little house on my grandparents' farm that I've dried herbs on but has sat idle of late.

  28. Kristi, I was hoping you'd come back and share your idea! cooleeeo!

  29. Kat, let that screen sit idle no longer. Go for it!
