Making Me Nuts

If you would like to make an autumn nut garland for yourself, it's really easy. You'll need a variety of nuts. I threw in some cinnamon sticks and small gold jingle bells for fun. You also need a craft drill, a needle and something to string them with. Any type of string or cord will do. I used spun wool because I like the warm, fuzzy organic look of it. Most importantly, use a vice.

Not being the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to tools, I tried to drill a hole in the nut while simply holding it in my hand. Heck, it's a tiny little drill and a tiny little nut...how hard could it be? HARD! The nut flew across the room with the force of a bullet shot from a gun. Thinking the first time must have been a fluke, I tried it several more times this way before I realized it wasn't going to work. Like I've said before, I'm a hands-on learner. I'm fortunate I didn't drill THROUGH my hand.

Hence, the good vice. It helped me get the job done in no time. And it really was a lot of fun.

I'm glad you survived. You're willing to sacrifice it all for a nut garland. Go you!
I'm off to check out the acorns.
Have I told you how much I love your nutty side?

AND I just realized your title for this post sounds rather pirate-y. Swoon!

Aye that.

"I'm going off my nut!" Okay--what movie is THAT from?

The fact that you shot acorns across the room several times before using a vice makes me like you even more.

I love the nut garland. I've reserved some nuts to spray them gold, but maybe I'll leave them as they are, as I like the simple effect of yours.

I love the honesty in your crafting. As ever, we learn so much more from our mistakes. (I'd have tried it again, as well).I knew I'd like the tool, when I saw it in your earlier post. Now I know I'm looking for a craft drill.

Thanks for linking to my acorns. I should have known a Curious Acorn would like them!

Nancy, It's a Wonderful Life or Back to the Future...or about a gillion other movies. "Yes, I Googled." What movie is that from? Haha!

Cheryl, the brand name of the drill I use is Walnut Hollow. I think you can find them online.

is it called walnut hollow b/cs it is purposed for nut hollowing or is that just a fluke??

anyway, this post makes me happy in that whole "i couldn't handle my color coded bookshelf" kind of way and an "i'm so jealous crafty people actually exist" but at least you had to learn in a "hands on" kind of way. b/cs otherwise, i'd have felt like a tool. oh yeah, i just said that.

and the comment love here? even funnier.

Misty, just a fluke. :) You're not a tool, but it's funny that you said it.

I just draft sealed the new back door with a can of foam , took off the protective gloves then could resist prodding a bit of foam and now can't get the darn stuff off my fingers...I'll never learn

Jodiiiiii! Okay, I actually had to google, "Yes, I googled." I have not seen Confessions of a Shopaholic." Guess maybe I should.

I like that one of the defining characteristics of our relationship is that we speak movie references to one another. That, and the fact that we've never met. And that we both love Jesus.

Enjoy your day. Watch out for aliens in the cornfields.

Nancy, not worried, I'm from group #1."Did some one save me ?" "Yes baby, they (He) did"

oh, I have to admit I haven't used my glue gun in years. I made nut stars for the tree once , no drilling though. this is serious crafting!

it's gorgeous, in a way that only natural things can be of course.

oh, that completely reminded me of another year I strung real cranberries as garland on the tree. such a martha stewart I was for a while.
the carpet got so so stained when removing them and they all burst.
