Now's a good time to mention that I have a patient family who will occasionally indulge me when I get an idea to do something like this late at night.
It was quite a job and took us several hours to complete. Halfway through, I was glared at more than once, and received the answer "I DON'T CARE!!" to the innocent question, "Do you think this is dark brown or purple?". But since I knew we could all sleep in the next day, I only felt a little bit guilty. And besides, we found some books we forgot that we had.
In the end, we were all happy with the result.

wow. Sounds crazy but it looks great! What a fun project to torture your family with...ha.
I'm glad you got to sleep in. I'm loving what you've done with it. I also am following the sugar blog now, thanks for the suggestion.
JoAnn, haha torture is right! It was my teenager who glared the most, but she did find that copy of Pride and Prejudice that I told her we did own, thus saving her allowance money. So there!
very cool Jodi! :) defiantly makes the bookshelf look more attractive
Love it! I did this with my kids' books once but guess what? They didn't keep following my color scheme. The nerve.
It looks great and I would get pleasure out of such a project. I also love the YELLOW bookshelves. Yellow, yellow, I can't get enough!
This is...okay...I'm not sure what word I'm se.arching for here. I'm just so completely happy this morning that I know someone who arranges her books by color. That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen!
What fun. At first I wondered how you would find anything, then it occured to me that when I look for a particular book I know what colour the spine is. This method makes perfect sense.
Oh, and I linked to this today. I wrote the piece I was going to write anyway. This just made it SO much better!
Wow! All I can say is it's beautiful, but the thought of arranging all my books by color makes me tired... and I had to laugh at the reaction you got over "dark brown or purple."
It looks lovely! I find my best projects and motivation when I can't sleep!
Cheryl, it makes finding the book you want SO much easier. I don't know why, but it does!
In my defense, I had a cold and it was really late. PLUS, not being an artist I cannot tell the difference between the two colors--or any other for that matter--to save my life. But I must admit two things: 1. I was really happy to find the book I wanted and 2. It does look really good :) Nice job, Curious Acorn! <3
This is so fun. I'm totally going to do this. :) And I haven't checked down below yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting to find out what your chestnut project is!
the blog you linked too is so cool
as is this idea.. making art out of books.
jodi, wanna hear something funny? just two nights ago i'd finally HAD it w/ my color-coded bookshelf!!! my type A leanings were just so annoyed i couldn't go to my [insert theme here] area and grab the book i want. i knew where to find them before, not by the color of their spine. not ot mention the walking by and seeing a shade "out of order!" LOL i loved it in theory and if i were more artistically inclined instead of just librarian inclined i might've kept it! and unlike you, i had to do all mine by myself!! it was a long long night!!!! :)
Misty, haha, that's awesome! I'm not sure how long it's gonna last either. I know I'm going to get twitchy when people put books back in the wrong color section. Not nice. :)
i love the shelf with green books... i don't know why, it just looks so majestic :)
This made me laugh so much. A few years ago we had our house redecorated and my study is now painted a dusky shade of lavender. When I moved my books back in I was still in a design frame of mind. So I reordered them - black spines in one bookcase, white in another. Yellow, orange Penguins all in their own zone. Like you I had dilemmas over whether a colour was brown or green. And once I started to think about spine design, what about typefaces? Big blocky sans serif didn't go with fine scrolly lettering.
Done, I stepped back and admired. But when I next needed a book I couldn't find a thing.
I have now had to revert to good old-fashioned alphabetical. Although I am tempted, when next attacked by the imp of the perverse, to reorder them from Z to A.
Dear Dirtywhitecandy, first let me say I love your name. Just color took hours - I can't imagine going as far as you did :) However, I do find it easier to find the books, since it's easier to read the spines when they lay on their sides, which I had to do to make them fit by color. Thanks for visiting.
I think this looks like fun, but I have too many bookshelves to do them all this way. But maybe I could do one. It looks good, but I'm sorry the pictures were not clear enough for me to read all the titles! LOL.
hi Jodi, That is a really neat idea for arranging bks., never thought of that-by color !! ;o) When I can't go to sleep, Reading is what I get out of bed & do, a lot better than tossing turning.
Toni ;o)
Kristi, I wish I could have gotten the titles, too. Oh, well :)
Toni, much better than tossing and turning indeed :)
I would TOTALLY do this if I had more shelves to myself! I am so a color by sight girl. I have seen this idea before some time back... as a result of your post, I will probably dream it tonight, and wake feeling the desperate urge to follow your example. :)
LOVE it. Thanks for doing this and inspiring once again :)

I think I would love your house, Jodi. I love the books-by-color scheme but I think it would mess with my books by genre mind. You are a true artist!
