Color, Colour, Curiouser and Curiouser

My daughter Joy who lives at the bottom of the world sent me this little video clip 'cause she knew I'd love it. And I hope that any of you colorlover, seer, curious types (or even if you're not) will give it a look-see. It's very short--almost too short in my opinion since I enjoyed it so much. What he said resonated with me on so many levels that it almost made me weepy. I wanted to sit down at this guy's table, eat pasta, and ask questions.

Now I suppose that Mr. Wolff was coming from a secular point of view, but I pondered over how his perspective is applicable to me as a believer-artist. When I watched this six-minute documentary, I couldn't help but rejoice at how God has wired us as unique individuals, and invites us to participate in His creative fire, to exercise the gifts he gave us. Surrendering my life to Christ has made it all doubly good because He has sanctified my curiousity, appreciation, and imagination, and puts it to use for His purposes. The whole package.

I'd be very interested to know what you think.

I think you are quite muscular. You have taught me to see and appreciate color in a way that no one ever has before. I know I lack the artist imagination you have, but I've learned to appreciate what you do with yours. And I sincerely hope that, someday, you will have an umbrella stand filled with an umbrella from every color in the rainbow!

Nancy, you have the imagination and artistry of a great writer. I love the way you write. My writing muscle is flabby. It takes me forever to get on a page what is tangled in my brain and tripping over my keyboard. My husband has to proofread, and often remarks, "Just what are you trying to say?" I sincerely hope I have a cupboard full of those mugs :) "Tell Graham to see".

Thank you, friend. I'm inviting myself over to drink out of your mugs (and use your umbrellas--Tut, tut! Looks like rain!)

Oh, I love this, "He invites us to participate in His creative fire"! To be in it, consumed by it...but joining in it is a whole other realm of beauty. Thanks for this.

Love the post. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I too love the umbrella and mug collection. I've always loved color but I don't know what it is, some reaction to winter maybe, but yesterday I was trying on clothes and they were all green, yellow, and pink. They made me happy to look at. I'm glad are people out there that understand this.

Thanks for sending the clip to your mama, Joy!Love what he said about packaging ourselves to show the authentic person of who we are, to reveal our soul, esecially as we age and our once familiar shell changes. We put on clothes, specific ones. Even if they're random thrift shop finds, certain ones register- that's me.

Same way with the cycle of curiosity, appreciation, imagination. I see something, some color combination or texture in an object that takes my breath away and I want to repeat it or alter it slightly and then see what happens. This cycle keeps me breathing, pulsing, moving toward my Creator. I feel secure and happy when I recognize him in some beauty. I express my reaction to the way that it makes me feel.

Jodi, this was just beautiful. I loved what he said about having "seeing muscles". I feel like you, I am curious, my imagination is sparked and I am inspired to create some twist of the beauty, His beauty, I have seen. I love the cycle of creating, the unending circle of seeing, appreciating, making. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Would you mind if posted this on my blog, too?

Glad you enjoyed the Bright Star photos. I think it is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. I don't think I could ever tire of looking at those lovely images. . .

fantastic video! thanks for sharing! love his thoughts about design.

btw, i noticed he kept selecting orange items -- e.g., orange mug, orange umbrella... what color would you be?

Jodi said...

Julie, i think it would depend on the day. :)

Thought provoking. He is living the detail and the differences. Love the idea of curiosity being a muscle. The painting at the top of his stairs is wonderful. I could freeze the video at that point. In fact, I did the first time I watched it!

I think you've said it very beautifully in your last paragraph...the way I feel about this marvelous creativity and curiosity and looking, looking, looking at everything to see the beauty of it. I love how you say the Creator has sanctified our curiosity when we have surrendured our lives to Christ....sometimes I grow a little dull but you have sharpened me up again with this post, your words and the video. Thank you!

Dear Sara, thank you, you couldn't have said anything nicer. Thank you for getting what I was trying to express. I get dull, too. We need each other to stay sharp, to see. All of us are the sum of the parts that make up the whole--that Eternal whole. And if someone looks at me, that's what I want them to see - the Eternal. Everything else will pass away.

Not colour related, but -- I like the part about the stores not having items available and the perception of each store... Very interesting how we interpret things that happen to us.

Jodi, you have opened my eyes yet again. But isn't that what separates artists and great artists? Perception and awareness of the minute details? Love the color.

I want to have a house filled with umbrellas exactly like his and mugs exactly like those, and I want to choose a red one for the coffee and a blue one for the rain, and walk along British streets and say, "Lovely! Diesel fuel?" to the cabdriver.

Everything about that video is just perfect. I love it. It turned my world colourful today. British style.

Oh my goodness. This thrills and refreshes me more than words can say! I've watched it multiple times, and see something new with each viewing. Thank you so much, Jodi, for fanning that God given color-creative-curiosity flame with this so very inspiring video. And your words in the post brought it all together so well--I wholeheartedly concur!! I think we must be compatriots from the same *expressionist* planet. Much love to you and yours this Wednesday morning.
