Making Merry

We've been busy Christmas-ing, but I wanted to stop by to say, may God bless each and every one of you swell readers. My prayers are that in this coming year, you will experience all that is good, even beyond your imagining.

How lovely are thy branches

Nothing better than a Christmas card winking at you on a gray December day

Is it already Christmas in New Zealand?

Happy happy Christmas to you, dear Jodi, and may you and your family be blessed, as you have blessed me and mine. (Love your tree, those darling felt Christmas trees are my favorite, except maybe for that little green acorn ;)

You know those odd, old-timey, cast iron cricket figures you see every now and again in antique shops. I've always wondered why anyone would want a cast iron cricket, and now I want one...and a fire place!

So, The Little Miss received a collection of "classic Christmas" movies - movies like the stop motion favorites 'Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer'. The collection features Cricket on the Hearth an adaptation of the novella by Dickens (Charles, of course!)

I, not being a fan of Dickens to this point, had never heard of it. The movie was charming enough that I sent Zac to the library straight away to see if he could find it...well, the children were having a story time in the section which housed the library's copy, so he couldn't get it. He came home empty-handed and said that it was probably public domain and would be online. Like I want to read a book online.

Being the ever fussy wife, I explained that computers aren't the sort I take to bed and snuggle with in the covers - I required a sewn-paper book.

He went back to the library some days later and retrieved the book. It was incredibly charming, and quite an easy read, and nothing like the classic Christmas movie.

There is a part of the story where one of the main characters believes his wife has been unfaithful to him, and is thinking himself sick over it by the hearth. He spends all night thinking, and the Cricket on the Hearth, spends the night with him chirping to comfort him and tells him that his wife has not been unfaithful. The story wraps up quickly thereafter and all fears and quandry are put to rest.

However, there is a bit that reminded me of you and your ministry. (We really wish we could be with you, in your home this Merry Christmas.) It is during the part of the book where the Cricket is soothing the main character of his wife's fidelity that the Cricket recounts why it is that the character loves her and loves his home with her in it.

"'The hearth she has - how often! - blessed and brightened,' said the Cricket; 'the hearth which, but for her, were only a few stones and bricks and rusty bars, but which has been, through her, the Altar of your Home; on which you have nightly sacrificed some petty passion, selfishness, or care, and offered up the homage of a tranquil mind, a trusting nature, and an overflowing heart; so that the smoke from this poor chimney has gone upward with a better fragrance than the richest incense that is burnt before the richest shrines in all the gaudy temples of this world! - Upon your own hearth; in its quiet sanctuary; surrounded by its gentle influences and associations; hear her! Hear me! Hear everything that speaks the language of your hearth and home!'" - Charles Dickens, Cricket on the Hearth

Merry Day Two of Christmas!

This post is putting me in the Christmas spirit... even though Christmas is already over, haha. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas day! (We loved getting your card in the mail, by the way.) Those sugar cookies look yummy... I made shape sugar cookies for the first time in a while this year, and it was so fun. Especially the edible glitter part :)

That acorn looks like it's making lots of friends on your tree :)
