Comfort Canning

"You know what I love about cooking?"
"What's that?"
"I love that after a day when nothing is sure, and when I say "nothing" I mean nothing, you can come home and absolutely know that if you add egg yolks to chocolate
and sugar and milk, it will get thick. It's such a comfort." --Julie & Julia

Sometimes life is crazy, and things can be scary to the point where they work your last nerve. Seasons can be "not sure." God is sure. Praise Him. So I'm leaning deep into that daily bread, and making some cherry jam.

The two books pictured above are quite fun. I highly recommend them.

I've been having a tough time lately and making bread and bottling jam has been a real comfort. Now my son is visiting and seeing his pleasure at eating the bread and jam is an added bonus!

Sorry to hear about your tough times, Maureen. Having kids home to eat the goods is an added bonus, though.

been thinking about you.. saw your bench press a buick card. ain't that the truth! i have never canned anything or made jelly. my mom gave me a pressure cooker once, but it scared me so i never used that either. i am also scared of the gas grill, but that has nothing to do with jelly. i am happy that you find comfort in the kitchen. must be like how i feel when i run to the woods:) xo

Graceandglory, xo back. If we were neighbors, I'd teach you how not to be afraid of a pressure canner. And I'd run through the woods with you. :)

My nerves are being a bit worked as well, "God is sure. Praise Him." Thankful for our daily bread! Your cherry jam looks good, we are making chocolate pizza tonight as a comfort food. :-)

Just popping in for a second, your words have been resounding in my head all year, cherry jam sounds yummy....I have figs coming out my ears, wondering now about fig preserves.....One thing I do know....the daily bread that you mentioned has never failed me yet :)

Thinking of you.
I read this post yesterday and then I went and froze peaches for the winter. Slicing and saving food the old fashioned (ish) way is the perfect antidote for the internet. Have you noticed?
Anyway, I loved this. I love you. I'm going to have to check out those books.

(my cry in the bathroom stall? it was caused by overwhelming awesomeness. evidence of a great God. it was good.)

Great post, Jodi! Love your Childs quote, and with you, I am so grateful that amidst the uncertainties of life, God is sure.

I always find it funny that jam / pickle making etc is called canning in the US when it usually involves glass jars! Here in England we would just say 'making' jam / pickle etc -i dont think theres an overall term.
Did u get my msg about the parcel you sent to me? Its lovely, me and D loved opening it, thankyou so much! I just wanted to check its ok for me to show it in a blog post?
